Project Goals
The main objective of this project was to transform an outdated bungalow into a modern, light-filled home with improved internal flow and stronger connections to the garden. The homeowners—a couple planning to sell the property in a few years—wanted to enhance both the functionality and market value of their home. Situated in the Green Belt, the design also needed to comply with strict planning guidelines. Key goals included:
- Creating Better-Connected Living Spaces: Redesign the layout to create a sense of flow and connection between the newly configured rooms.
- Maximising Garden Views: Introduce more glazing and open-plan living to improve visibility and access to the garden.
- Adding Value for Resale: Enhance the property’s market appeal through clever spatial design and contemporary finishes.
- Respecting Planning Constraints: Develop a proposal that meets Green Belt planning requirements while delivering a modern aesthetic.
- Enhancing Kerb Appeal: Refresh the external look of the property using modern materials, while keeping in harmony with the surrounding street scene.
Design Solutions
Modern Rear Extension
To replace the large, underperforming conservatory, we designed a modern rear extension that improves the home’s thermal efficiency and adds a versatile family living area. Full-height glazing and wide openings were incorporated to flood the space with natural light and create a strong connection to the garden.
Reconfigured Interior Layout
The internal layout was thoughtfully redesigned to enhance the sense of flow and openness throughout the home. By opening up key areas and redefining room boundaries, we created a more intuitive circulation and clearer sightlines across the living spaces.
Carefully Considered Design for Green Belt Setting
Given the home’s Green Belt location, we approached the design with sensitivity, aligning with planners’ expectations. The extension was kept proportionate and discreet in massing while offering significant improvements in usability and appeal.
Modern Materials with a Subtle Presence
The external appearance was updated using a palette of clean, modern materials that complement the existing architecture and surrounding homes. The refreshed façade helps the bungalow feel more current, yet still rooted in the character of the street.
Outcome
This project delivered a well-balanced blend of contemporary design and practical upgrades within a sensitive planning context. The new layout and extension have dramatically improved the usability, light levels, and visual connection to the outdoors. At the same time, the exterior enhancements give the home a fresh identity while remaining in keeping with its surroundings.
The result is a beautifully updated bungalow that now offers greater comfort, market appeal, and spatial quality—perfectly aligned with the owners’ aspirations for a future sale.
